What the law protects when you work with an ordained minister.
Conversations with an ordained minister acting in a professional spiritual capacity are legally recognised as privileged communications — known as clergy-penitent privilege — in all 50 US states, and on a case-by-case basis in Canada. This offers you protections that standard coaching cannot. (See FAQ below for how this works by jurisdiction.)
Privileged communications between you and an ordained minister cannot be subpoenaed or used as evidence in a court of law. Neither you nor your minister can be compelled to disclose what was shared in a confidential session. In most states, both you and the minister may assert the privilege. Your minister cannot be forced to testify against you.
Note: The clergy-penitent privilege does not apply to disclosures of child abuse. In most jurisdictions ordained ministers are mandatory reporters of known or suspected abuse of a minor. Andrea is committed to the safety of children and will always comply with mandatory reporting requirements.

HOW THE PRIVILEGE WORKS
What makes a communication privileged.
Three conditions generally apply: the communication must be made in confidence, to an ordained minister acting in their professional spiritual capacity, and be of a spiritual, pastoral or counselling nature. In the US, this privilege is comparable in strength to attorney-client privilege. (Full details, jurisdiction differences, and exceptions are covered in the FAQ below.)

Is coaching with an ordained minister confidential? Yes. Conversations with an ordained minister acting in a professional spiritual capacity are legally recognised as privileged communications in all 50 US states, known as clergy-penitent privilege. In Canada, similar protection applies on a case-by-case basis under the Wigmore Test, established by the Supreme Court in R. v. Gruenke (1991).

Does clergy privilege apply in Canada? Yes, though differently than in the US. Canada does not treat it as automatic — each case is assessed individually using the Wigmore Test, which weighs the importance of confidentiality against the interests of justice. Canada also uses the broader term "religious communications" and applies a non-denominational approach.
